TOOTH & GUM PROBLEMS

The only thing worse than going to the dentist is not going. This applies to animals, too - dental disease can cause misery. The most common problems in dogs and cats are:

  •  Dental plaque (dense mass of bacteria on surface of tooth)
  •  Dental calculus (mineralized plaque)
  •  Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums)
  •  Periodontal disease (disruption of tissues around the teeth)

Dental procedures are an important part of our service to your pet. Dental scaling, or the removal of plaque, helps prevent periodontal disease. Extractions are sometimes necessary.

Owners can help to prevent the build-up of dental plaque by brushing their pet's teeth. Pet toothpaste is one of several products available at our practice for dental care. Another one is Maxiguard Oral Cleansing Gel, a Vitamin C/Zinc gel that cleans the mouth and freshens the breath without brushing.

Diet and dental health are closely linked. Next time you visit us, have a talk about your pet's diet. A few words of advice might save a lot of trouble later on. At Mid Mountains Animal Health Centre we also have special foods that will help prevent dental problems.

Hills Oral Care diet, available for both cats and dogs, reduces the rate of plaque, stain and tartar (calculus) accumulation on the teeth of adult pets. It's effective and pets love it.
