ITCHY DOGS

"An itch you can’t scratch" is generally regarded as almost as bad as a serious hurt, so imagine what pets sometimes have to endure. Itchy skin in dogs can cause them untold misery and serious ill-health. Itching can have several causes:

  • Skin parasites (flea bites, demodex mange mites, sarcoptic mange mites, ticks, lice). The cure is often simple. There are extremely good parasite prevention programs available. What works for one animal may not work for another, though usually we can find what’s right for your pet.
  • Sensitivities (flea collars, flea sprays, shampoos and conditioners, deodorants, fly repellants, fabric cleaners, rug shampoos and powders). Yes, it’s true that sometimes the chemicals and medications with which you try to look after your pet can have the side-effect of irritating its skin. However, your vet will be able to identify the problem and recommend changes.
  • Food sensitivities (allergies). This is a common cause of skin problems. As in many areas of pet health, correct nutrition can make a huge difference to an animal's wellbeing.
  • Dry skin and dandruff. This may be due to a lack of essential fatty acids in the pet’s diet. Again, correct nutrition is the answer.

If your dog has itchy skin, don’t let it suffer. We can offer diagnosis and treatment to control the problem.
